Glasses, Contacts or Lasik?: Each can improve our vision and enhance our lives. The use of a laser to sculpt the front of the eye for better vision (Lasik) has proven to be a wonderful choice for many. The best choice will depend upon your eyesight and your lifestyle. Knowledgeable counseling will let you choose the option that is right for you. Why dilate my eyes?: It is essential to examine the eyes for disease. Many diseases do not become visible until the advanced stages and are more successfully treated when detected early. Examining the inside of the eye through a normal-sized pupil is like viewing a room through a keyhole - many areas just are not visible. When drops are used to dilate the pupil, the door is opened wide. What is glaucoma?: Glaucoma is a potentially blinding condition related to elevated fluid pressure inside the eye. Most often, this pressure gradually and painlessly damages the nerves that transmit sight. When caught early, through regular eye examinations, glaucoma can usually be controlled with little or no further vision loss. How does diabetes affect the eye?: Diabetes can damage the small blood vessels that nourish the eye's light sensitive retina. These vessels may then leak blood, develop outpouchings aneurysms, or may grow fragile new vessels in the wrong places, leading to major bleeding within the eye. Early diagnosis and treatment are essential in preventing possible blindness. Diabetics should have their eyes dilated and examined at least once a year.
